The Health Tax Alliance is a grouping of organisations, researchers and advocates working in the public health sector who want to strengthen the advocacy around health taxes to reduce the consumption of harmful products, improve public health, and increase government revenue.
WHY we do what we do
Globally health taxes have been shown as a mechanism that saves lives, prevents disease and generates revenue. Considered a best buy, the World Health Organization defines health taxes as excise taxes levied on products that have a negative public health impact.
WHAT we want to achieve
We want to reduce the affordability of tobacco, alcohol and sugar sweetened beverages to make it harder for people to buy it so that we reduce the consumption of these products.
HOW we will do it
- Advocate
- Educate
- Engage
WHY is this important
Increased health taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugar will generate significant revenue to strengthen South Africa's public health system.
